You can arrange your pages into filesystem-like hierarchies by making them children of parent pages (Figure 4-19). In the Attributes box on any single page s Edit screen, you ll be able to select another existing page as the parent. That page could, in turn, have another parent, and so on.

The Path field is the target of the link, synonymous with the href attribute of an anchor element. It can be either an absolute URL to some resource on the Web or a Drupal path (see 2 for a description of the different types of paths). You could, for example, create a content node such as a book page named Terms of Service. You would then be able to make a menu item called Terms of Service. In this case, the value in the Path field would look something like node/7.

The Expanded field applies to items that have subitems. It controls whether the menu is expanded by default. If the menu should always show the subitems, check Expanded. The default is for a menu item with subitems to expand when you click it. The Parent Item field is important because it determines in which menu the item is to appear and where on the menu it is located. Forgetting to explicitly set this will result in the item landing in whatever menu is at the top of the list, probably the navigation menu. Every menu that you ve created appears in the Parent Item drop-down list. The Weight field allows you to control the order in which your menu items appear. Smaller, lighter numbers appear nearer to the top, and larger, heavier numbers sink toward the bottom.

If you ve turned on permalinks, your page s URL will be built by adding its slug to that of its parent and any other page ancestors, as shown in Figure 4-20.

After you have created a menu using the administrative interface, you need to tell Drupal where to show it. Navigate to the block administration page (admin/block), and you will see your new custom menu listed as a block. Enable the block and customize it to your liking (as discussed in 2). Then it will then appear on your site.

When the Menu module is enabled, all content-creation forms will have an extra section titled Menu Item Settings. These settings enable you to place a link to the content being created in any of the existing menus. The Title field contains the text that will be displayed for the link, and the Parent Item field determines in which menu and in which order the menu item will appear. Pay careful attention to the Parent Item setting, as all of the available menus are listed.
