Let s review some of the most important concepts covered in this chapter: Sequences: A sequence is a data structure in which the elements are numbered (starting with zero). Examples of sequence types are lists, strings, and tuples. Of these, lists are mutable (you can change them), whereas tuples and strings are immutable (once they re created, they re fixed). Parts of a sequence can be accessed through slicing, supplying two indices, indicating the starting and ending position of the slice. To change a list, you assign new values to its positions, or use assignment to overwrite entire slices. Membership: Whether a value can be found in a sequence (or other container) is checked with the operator in. Using in with strings is a special case it will let you look for substrings. Methods: Some of the built-in types (such as lists and strings, but not tuples) have many useful methods attached to them. These are a bit like functions, except that they are tied closely to a specific value. Methods are an important aspect of object-oriented programming, which we look at in 7.

Each cache implementation shares a common set of tags for flushing their contents. When thinking through your caching, determine how and when you want objects to be removed from the cache. By default, each cache model type has a means of managing the cached data on a granular level. They can remove individual objects based on memory, recent access, or age. Beyond each cache model s inherent behavior you can further give them instruction on when to the flush their entire contents. The flush tags are made available to provide such functionality. There are two flush tags, as shown in table 9.4.

<flushOnExecute> The <flushOnExecute> tag has a single attribute, statement, and allows for a cache flush to be triggered upon the execution of a particular mapped statement. This is useful when you have results that should be updated when a change is made to the underlying database. For example, if you have a cache containing a list of Categories, you could use <flushOnExecute> to flush the cache whenever a new Category is inserted. As stated earlier, the cache will be entirely flushed, and therefore you should take care to avoid creating mapped statement flushing dependencies with constantly changing data. This could effectively render your cache useless because of the high rate of flushing and populating the cache. Listing 9.2 defines a cache model and shows an example of how to use the <flushOnExecute> tag to invalidate the cache when new data is added to the database.

Now that you re acquainted with sequences, let s move on to character sequences, also known as strings.

To use the <flushOnExecute> tag, you need to specify the statement name, using the statement attribute, which should trigger the cache flush. If the statement is contained within a sqlMap that uses a namespace attribute, you must specify the full

In this chapter, you see how to use them to format other values (for printing, for example), and take a quick look at the useful things you can do with string methods, such as splitting, joining, searching, and more.

After completing the display column configuration for the query, click the OK button of the Query Designer window. The generated query text is shown in the upper pane of Figure 3-57. Press F5 or click the button on the toolbar to run the query.
